Having read forums on tourist visa extension in Uganda leading up to my visa extension, I wanted to share my experience. With two weeks left in our 3 month tourist visa (we crossed at the land border in Busia) we decided to try extending our visa in Kampala. We only needed to extend the visa 2 weeks to make our departure flight.
We tried doing the extension only, but when we tried to submit the online application, it said the application could not be submitted. Instead, we went to the Department of Internal Affairs. At the gate, a police officer told us that we could give our passports to him with 50 USD in it, and he would get us the extension. We didn’t pay much attention to him and just asked him to show us where we extend our visa. At the office, we went to a window and asked about the extension. The lady pointed to a list of application requirements which included 1) copy of passport & tourist visa, 2) copy of departure flight, 3) cover letter describing reason for visa extension, 4) visa extension application, 5) letter of host, 6) citizen ID of host.
They have a photocopy machine in the building, so we went to get our passports and visas copied as well as an extension application. All the copies and applications came out to 1200 UGX. We had already printed our cover letter and departure tickets. Requirements 5 & 6 worried us because we didn’t have a host, so we just ignored it. We put all the documents together with our US passports and gave it to the lady at the window. She wrote a receipt for us and said to come back after 3 pm in two days.
We felt a little uncomfortable leaving our passports there for two days, but two days later, I came back to the office after 3 pm, walked up to the counter, gave the same lady our receipts, she gave me our passports, and I went back to the hotel. It didn’t cost anything and was surprisingly efficient. Even though we only needed 2 weeks more, they gave us a stamp for a 2-month extension.
I’m not sure why it was so easy, but I hope your experiences as just as straightforward
